Oliver McGowan (Learning Disability & Autism)
45 1/2 Day Children-Focused Course
This course provides essential knowledge and practical skills to support children and young people with learning disabilities and autism. It is aligned with the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training standards and focuses on delivering safe, person-centred, and inclusive care.
Course Objectives
- Understand learning disabilities and autism in children and young people.
- Recognise the individual needs, strengths, and differences of each child.
- Understand the importance of person-centred and child-centred care.
- Learn how to make reasonable adjustments in care and communication.
- Develop skills in effective communication, including non-verbal approaches.
- Recognise signs of distress, sensory overload, and unmet needs.
- Understand behaviours as communication and how to respond appropriately.
- Learn strategies to reduce anxiety and support emotional regulation.
- Promote dignity, respect, inclusion, and positive experiences.
- Understand the role of families, carers, and advocates in care planning.
- Recognise safeguarding responsibilities and escalation procedures.
- Understand the importance of multi-agency working and collaboration.
- Reflect on personal attitudes, values, and biases in care delivery.
Target Audience
This course is suitable for healthcare professionals, support workers, teachers, social care staff, and anyone working with children and young people with learning disabilities and autism.
Course Format
- Duration: 1/2 Day
- Mode: In-person training only
- Assessment: Case studies, group discussions, and reflective learning
Certification
Participants will receive an Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training (Learning Disability & Autism – Children) Certificate upon successful completion of the course.
The certification is valid for 1–2 years (in line with organisational policy).
