This advanced course equips healthcare professionals with the knowledge and practical skills to safely administer buccal midazolam in emergency situations, particularly for the management of prolonged or repeated seizures.
Understand the causes and types of seizures and epilepsy.
Recognise the signs of a prolonged seizure (status epilepticus).
Learn the purpose, effects, and indications for buccal midazolam.
Understand medication protocols, including dosage, timing, and administration guidelines.
Develop skills in safe administration of buccal midazolam.
Learn how to monitor individuals before, during, and after administration.
Recognise potential side effects and adverse reactions.
Understand when and how to escalate to emergency services (e.g. 999 call procedures).
Gain knowledge of individual care plans and emergency protocols.
Develop skills in accurate documentation and incident reporting.
Understand legal and professional responsibilities including consent, capacity, and medication governance.
This course is suitable for nurses, healthcare assistants, support workers, school staff, and carers responsible for supporting individuals with epilepsy or seizure disorders.

Assessment: Practical demonstration, scenario-based training, and written assessment
Participants will receive a Buccal Midazolam Administration Certificate upon successful completion of the course.
The certification is valid for 1–2 years (subject to organisational policy and competency review).
