This advanced course equips healthcare professionals with the knowledge and practical skills to safely use Mechanical Insufflation–Exsufflation (MIE) devices to support airway clearance, particularly in individuals with impaired cough or neuromuscular conditions.
Understand the principles of airway clearance and respiratory physiology.
Learn the purpose and function of Mechanical Insufflation–Exsufflation (MIE) devices.
Identify patients who would benefit from MIE therapy (e.g. neuromuscular disorders, spinal injuries).
Develop skills in setting up and operating MIE equipment safely.
Understand how to adjust pressure settings and treatment parameters appropriately.
Learn how to assess patients before, during, and after MIE therapy.
Recognise and manage risks and contraindications associated with MIE use.
Gain knowledge of infection prevention and equipment maintenance.
Develop confidence in monitoring effectiveness and patient response.
Learn how to document interventions and escalate concerns appropriately.
Understand how to support patient comfort, dignity, and consent during treatment.
This course is suitable for nurses, respiratory therapists, physiotherapists, senior carers, and healthcare professionals involved in respiratory care and airway management.

Assessment: Practical demonstrations, clinical scenarios, and written assessment
Participants will receive a Mechanical Insufflation–Exsufflation (MIE) Certificate upon successful completion of the course.
The certification is valid for 2 years (in line with organisational policy).
