Medication Awareness and management Level 3/4


Safe and effective medication management is a critical responsibility in health and social care settings. This course provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to handle, store, administer, and record medications safely while complying with current legislation and best practice standards.


Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities associated with medication handling and administration in health and social care settings.

  • Apply the principles of safe medication storage, preparation, administration, and disposal, in accordance with organisational policies and national regulatory standards.

  • Identify and differentiate between various medication forms and routes of administration, including oral, topical, inhaled, injectable, and controlled medications.

  • Recognise common side effects, adverse reactions, allergies, and contraindications, and respond appropriately in line with clinical protocols and escalation procedures.

  • Maintain accurate medication documentation and record-keeping, including MAR charts, incident reporting, and medication audits.

  • Implement risk reduction strategies to minimise medication errors and promote safe practice.

  • Demonstrate awareness of person-centred care principles when supporting individuals with medication.

  • Understand the role of patient education and communication in promoting medication adherence, safety, and informed consent.

  • Apply medication management practices in line with relevant UK healthcare legislation and regulatory frameworks.
