This advanced course provides healthcare professionals with the knowledge and practical skills to safely perform venepuncture and peripheral cannulation, ensuring accurate blood collection and effective intravenous access while maintaining patient safety and comfort.
Understand the anatomy and physiology of the vascular system.
Learn the principles and indications for venepuncture and cannulation.
Develop skills in site selection and vein assessment.
Understand how to prepare equipment and maintain aseptic technique.
Gain practical knowledge of safe blood collection procedures.
Learn how to insert, secure, and manage peripheral cannulas.
Recognise and manage complications (e.g. infiltration, phlebitis, infection).
Understand how to maintain cannula patency and monitor insertion sites.
Develop skills in patient communication, consent, and reassurance.
Learn correct documentation and labelling procedures.
Understand infection prevention, including sharps safety and waste disposal.
Develop confidence in escalating concerns and seeking support when needed.
This course is suitable for nurses, healthcare assistants, phlebotomists, and clinical staff responsible for blood collection and intravenous access in healthcare and community settings.

Mode: In-person training only
Assessment: Practical competency assessment, supervised practice, and written assessment
Participants will receive a Venepuncture and Cannulation Certificate upon successful completion of the course.
The certification is valid for 2 years (subject to competency sign-off and organisational policy).
