Managing Restraints in Children Who Self-Harm


This course provides essential knowledge and practical skills for safely managing high-risk situations involving children who self-harm, focusing on de-escalation, safeguarding, and the lawful and ethical use of restraint as a last resort.


Course Objectives

  • Understand the principles of self-harm in children and young people and associated risks.

  • Recognise early warning signs and triggers that may lead to escalation or crisis behaviour.

  • Understand the legal and ethical framework surrounding the use of restraint in children.

  • Learn that restraint should always be used as a last resort, prioritising safety and dignity.

  • Develop skills in de-escalation, communication, and behaviour management techniques.

  • Understand different types of restrictive interventions and their risks.

  • Learn how to apply safe, proportionate, and least restrictive approaches.

  • Understand how to protect the child and staff from harm during high-risk situations.

  • Recognise the importance of post-incident support, reflection, and review.

  • Develop skills in accurate documentation, reporting, and safeguarding procedures.

  • Understand the importance of multi-agency working and care planning.

  • Promote trauma-informed and child-centred care practices.

Target Audience

This course is suitable for healthcare professionals, support workers, teachers, safeguarding leads, and residential care staff working with children and young people at risk of self-harm.

Course Format

Duration: 1 Day
Mode: In-person training only
Assessment: Scenario-based training, practical demonstrations (safe techniques), and written assessment

Certification

Participants will receive a Managing Restraints in Children (Self-Harm Awareness) Certificate upon successful completion of the course.
The certification is valid for 1–2 years (in line with organisational policy and competency review).
