Self-Harming Behaviour


This course provides essential knowledge and practical skills to recognise, understand, and respond to self-harming behaviours in a safe, compassionate, and person-centred way.


Course Objectives

  • Understand what self-harming behaviour is and why individuals may engage in it.
  • Recognise the signs, indicators, and risk factors associated with self-harm.
  • Understand the emotional, psychological, and social factors linked to self-harming behaviours.
  • Learn how to respond in a calm, supportive, and non-judgemental manner.
  • Develop skills in effective communication and active listening.
  • Understand how to reduce risk and support safety planning.
  • Learn how to manage distress, triggers, and escalation safely.
  • Recognise when to escalate concerns and follow safeguarding procedures.
  • Understand the importance of multi-agency working and care planning.
  • Learn how to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Develop skills in documentation, reporting, and ongoing support planning.
  • Understand the importance of staff wellbeing and emotional resilience.

Target Audience

This course is suitable for healthcare professionals, support workers, teachers, social care staff, and safeguarding leads working with individuals at risk of self-harm.

Course Format

  • Duration: 1 Day
  • Mode: In-person training only
  • Assessment: Case studies, group discussions, and reflective learning

Certification

Participants will receive a Self-Harm Awareness and Support Certificate upon successful completion of the course.
The certification is valid for 1–2 years (in line with organisational policy).
